Confirmation

A Step of Faith: Confirmation and being received into membership

What is Confirmation?

When we are confirmed we declare our faith in Jesus at a special church service. At this service we make for ourselves the promises that our parents and godparents made for us when we were baptised. We promise to commit ourselves to the Christian life of worship and service, to be open to the renewing power of God, to seek the strength of God's Spirit as we accept the cost of following Jesus Christ in our daily life and to witness, by word and deed, to the good news of God in Christ.

The congregation prays for us to be strengthened by the Holy Spirit to continue our Christian life. It is a public acknowledgement and affirmation that we are disciples of Jesus Christ.

What is church membership?

Being 'received into membership' means that you are welcomed into a particular Methodist church which can support you in your discipleship and where you can support others. In the service, the minister and a representative of the local church welcome you into membership.

If you have already been confirmed in another denomination, you can be received as a Methodist member. ‘Dual membership’ is welcomed in the Methodist Church – in other words you may become a member of the Methodist Church and still remain a member of another denomination. You would simply have to check with the Church you belong to now, whether they allowed this 'extended' membership.

If you have been received into membership in another Methodist church, your membership can simply be transferred and again you can be officially welcomed during a church service.
